COMET
PROJECT TITLE: Connect
The Connect Project is a two year programme being delivered as part of the Comet strategy to facilitate enhanced collaboration and lesson learning between the Councils and Local Strategy Partnerships of the Belfast Metropolitan area: Belfast, Carrickfergus, Castlereagh, Lisburn, Newtownabbey and North Down. The main aim of the Connect Project is to support links with other European Regions to facilitate the exchange of best practice and lesson learning in the context of approaches to economic, social, urban development and local governance.

The project is being facilitated through the organisation of best practice exchange visits with other European Regions including Valencia in Spain, Rybnik in Poland, Stockholm in Sweden and Vilnius in Lithuania.

Among the specific objectives of the Connect Programme are:
  • To establish a network across Europe with a selection of metropolitan areas to facilitate exchange of best practice and lesson learning on key economic, social, urban development and local governance issues
  • To encourage a more constructive dialogue with the metropolitan regions of Europe including regions of Europe including regions from the new member states to foster links and co-operation between members of the COMET Network and a selection of European Partners
  • To promote the image of COMET region and Northern Ireland throughout Europe and share the region's unique experience in respect of managing and promoting EU Structural Funds and supporting local economic development
  • To work collectively with other metropolitan regions to ensure that urban affairs are placed high on European Union's Policy Agenda

CONCORDIA
PROJECT TITLE: Partnership for Progress
The Project comprises a consortium, made up of trade unions (ICTU), business (CBI), agricultural sector (UFU) and the voluntary and community sector (NICVA), that aims to support social partner representatives develop common policies and explore international examples of best practice in order to drive forward social and economic development within NI.

The 'Partnership for Progress' project submitted by Concordia has three key aims, namely:
  • To develop a trans-national programme to explore international models of best practice. Funding is available for group, individual and long term study tours;
  • To support social partnership representatives (i.e. representatives nominated by one of the Concordia member organisations) on bodies associated with structural funds, primarily Local Strategy Partnerships (LSP's) to improve their skills and their ability to work in partnership with each other and
  • To advance a common agenda through policy development and research and to advise Government and Concordia members on the development of social partnership.
